Default From BMW to Audi (maybe)

Hello Gents,

i have my 1995 BMW 540i on craigslist for sale or trade. I was approached by a gent with a 1998 Audi A4 (AWD)1.8T, 5 speed with 209k.

Just looking to see what i need to look for:
What needs to be taken care of at this mileage:
How reliable and long lasting are these motors at this mileage?

Thanks gents, i hope to be making this forum a new home.

Josh

98 is the aeb motor, has forged internals.... so should be almost bullet proof

should of had the timing belt/water pump done at least 2 times.... if it wasn't done in the last 50-60k i would do it have it done

suspension bits can be an issue, cam/crank seals should of been done by now

should of check the oil for color, audi have sludge issues if oil changes are kept up with/conventional oil is used

i'm probably missing something the FAQ's can tell you the rest

these motors like any can go as long as they are maintaned

Turbo,

Thanks mate, i do read the FAQ but i get a better feel for the manufacturer from the posters it seems.
Do the Audi's run full synthetics like the BMW's?
I would never buy convential for any car, just me though.

Turbo,

Thanks. i have put a lot of work into the 540i and it is very quick by all means but i actually need to down size for fuel and personal situations so i am looking for either a turbo'd 4cyl or an inline 6 cyl motor 5 speed..

it is a 1995 BMW 540ia
(V8* 4.0L -285hp 295Tq
RWD (open 2.89 diff)
Leather , heated seats, on board computer, obd 1 internal reader, etc etc etc. typical bimmer stuff but none the less is fun and clean.

oh i know what it is, my buddies "step-dad" has one...... same car/gen.

he picked it up with full race suspension(previous owner was big into scca) with 70k on the clock for 4k..... i wanted to punch him in his vagina

great deal

you could go with a cq(i-5) but i would look at the b5(96-01.5) or an 02-03(b6) for a cheap car, but the b6 is a little bigger/heavier so it could be worse on mpg

*disclaimer b6 is more than those 2 years, just the 02-03 is going to be fairly cheap

I have thought about it but as for trade i get what is offered. i
I dont mind going smaller i have been around the block a few times with cars from 4cyl-V12's, but have had only a VW and thought it was garbage so i wanted to check in on the Audi's to make sure they are not as cheaply put together. I do hear a lot of stories but that is where research comes in.

To be honest.. i wouldnt do it. I would rather keep the 200k+ car where i know what maintenance has been done (plus mods) than for a mystery b5 which also has over 200k

just my opinion though, do what makes you happy.. if you are sick of the bimmer, trade it out
