Default blown turbo

need a new turbo, from what i can tell my A4 b5 model has this type of turbo:
kkk/058145703J / k03-029BG5010073.

partsgeek has a remanufactured turbo for $1000 and a brand new Dorman turbo for $400. Is the Dorman turbo any good?

hope somebody can help, thanks!

Never heard of Dorman, do you have a link? Is your car stock? I think your best bet, provided you have the time and ability, is to look for a low mileage used turbo in the classified ads on forums like this one, Audizine, or Craigslist. 99% of knock-off Chinese turbos are garbage.

Like CCA4 said look around on this website's and audizine for one, you can normally get one pretty cheap. If you can't find one and you are about to buy the $1000 I would say to go with a frankenturbo, it's $1000 and includes a turbo, manifold, and a few other things I believe. This way it will run like stock if you want it to or you can add a tune/injectors and make you car alot faster.

Or you could always rebuild yours

Good point. They do make rebuild kits with new seals and crap like that, just depends on exactly whats wrong with the one in your car.

Right, sorry. I assumed you were buying online and was wondering if you could link a URL to the website. If not, do they have any pictures or descriptions you could provide? Cheap chinese turbos are pretty easy to pick out of a crowd.

Being that you're still stock, I second my initial suggestion to go find a lightly used stock turbo. They can be had for a few hundred bucks.

Dorman is a huge parts supplier, they do everything from radiator caps to brake calipers. Mostly OEM replacement stuff at much lower prices. From what I know their parts are considered mid-range and I wouldn't think twice about buying them, but I've never heard of Dorman turbos. If they're new and in that price range, chances are they're made in the same factory as ebay turbos. That's not necessarily a bad thing since they could be selling only the turbos that passed a higher level of QC and could very well last years, but it would be a gamble.

Yeah the stock photos of those turbochargers don't give me a warm fuzzy. All of the identifying marks you look for like stamps and casting marks and the tag that should be riveted to the compressor housing have all been photoshopped out or never existed in the first place. Hard to say what you'll be getting.
