Block clean w/pistons still in
I have a 99.5 1.8 A4 Avant and have the motor out of the car and fully dissasembled except for the crankshaft and pistons. Is it safe for me to use a pressure washer on it as long as I make sure to dry it out really good? It has 200,000 miles worth of caked on oil :/

What do you plan on doing with the short block..?? Cleaning it and putting it back together..?? If I went threw all that trouble to pull the motor and strip it down it would seam kinda of pointless not to have it rebuilt and just clean it and put it back together.. I mean even if you just had it hot tanked, line honed and replaced just the rings and main and rod bearings it wouldn't be all that expensive at the machine shop.. the shop by me charges like $35.00 per cylinder for a hone and a hot tank and micro polish on the crank isnt to much.. main bearings and rod bearings with thrust washers would be like $100 or so.. if I remember right a couple years ago I did the short block on my Toyota pick up 2.2 and the machine shop charged me around $500 to hot tank hone and micro polish the crank replaced the rod and mains and new piston rings and reassembled the block.. just my .02 cents..

I just rebuilt the AEB head because the cam chain tensioner blew the plastic piece(but valves didn't contact pistons The bottom end is all within tolerances and believe me I would take it to a shop in a sec if I could afford it at the moment but I figure if it is not broken AND within specs it can wait. I am going to tackle the cleaning with a grout brush and simple green.

with 200k im sure a hone, rings, and bearings couldnt hurt anything. seriously, though. those things are common to do when the engine is out because it makes it much easier than when its in. if it has 200k worth of caked oil, the bearings have 200k worth of wear as well. do the right thing here. freshen it up

I understand money might be tight but I learned the hard way what happens when you cut corners.. better off doing things right the first time around.. personally I would wait and save the money and do the block before you put it back together.. the hard part is already done as far as pulling the motor and taking the head off..
