blinker/flasher failure

blinker/flasher failure
I just purchased a '98 A4 Quattro for my dearly beloved daughter. It needs some predictable repairs (CV Boot and axle, front lower ball joint, valve over gasket) that I'll have done by a trusted mechanic... but I'm now looking for some advice regarding an intermittent blinker/flasher failure. The blinkers only blink some of the time and the emergency flasher doesn't always flash.
I've been led to believe this is not uncommon in Audis!
Is this an electrical relay problem?
Should I simply replace the flasher?
Where should I start looking?
Any and all advice will be appreciated.
Thanks.
G'day.

That sounds remarkably like the problem I had with my A4 (B5) last year.
I replaced the hazard relay at a cost of about 30 UKP.

Just to clarify before I go buy the hazard switch/relay...I'm having the problem where my turn signal will work for between 1 and 3 seconds and then stop working, but my hazards work fine. Is this consistent with a bad hazard switch/relay?

this is very common in vdubs... it can be the flasher relay, but before buying the relay, you should spay a small amount of silicone lubricant (or wd-40 if you dont have silicone) in the stalk area of the flashers. Move it around while spraying it in there with the little red tube. If this fixes the problem, then it is either the switch on its way out, or the contacts are filthy...
