My favorite oil has always been the Castrol Edge full synthetic, and I run 5w-30 in my 98 a4 2.8. I had it in my BMW with 205,000 on it and the engine internals were spotless, and I went 6000 miles between oil changes

I run pennzoil ultra 5w-40 Euro full synthtic, it's hard to find but it has made my car run really well and much quieter. I used to run Mobil 1 0w-40, but it made my lifters very noisy but besides that both oils have worked well for me

I had no issues with high mileage on the BMW I previously owned, I bought it at 172,000 and ran it 80 miles daily on the Castrol Edge full synthetic up until it was involved in an accident at 205,000. Never had a problem with it and it always ran great. As of right now in my a4 I have the Shell formula full synthetic because I found a couple cases at a good price, and while it runs well, it's noticeably rougher as I get closer to my 6000 mile mark for oil changes. My advice is to just run the Castrol Edge full synthetic and see how it does, it worked great for me and it's easy to find at Walmart for something like $27 for a 5 quart jug

Hey Pb, where do you find the Pennzoil? I have always ran mobil 1 0w-40 and notice my lifters are noisy. I'm due up for a change so I think I'll try some of that.

I have 193k on mine. But I get it on amazon in a case of 6. It's a little more pricey (around $50 for 6 quarts) but you only use 4.5 and they have two rebates going on. It's oil, don't buy the cheapest crap
Ferrari dealerships also sell it if you are close to one, its a new oil so I'm hoping autozone will start selling it soon (they already sell a couple types of it but not euro)

I run Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula in my 2000 A6 twin turbo and don't have any issues with this superb oil in this application. My BMW Z3 2.8 also runs well on this oil.

I've always been a fan of Mobil 1. I'm at 185,000 miles and going strong, original turbo too!!

this is one of those questions. you ask, and everyone will give you a different answer. with that said, i feel if you are running a quality synthetic or (gasp, dare i say it?) a quality synthetic belnd and regular oil changes, you should be dandy. and what i mean by regular changes is around 5000 miles. i do 3000, and yes i admit i am crazy. the point here is to never allow the oil degrade to the point of sludge, and with the hot turbo, the oil will degrade faster than normal, hence the short oil changes.

as for the oil type, id just say stick with a good synthetic. mobil is a favorite of course, and castrol must have payed good money to audi since it says castrol oil on my girlfriend's b8. personally, 0w-40 mobil 1 is the go to oil for most. i switched to 10w-40 because of low idle pressure, and it didnt go up enough to satisfy me. i will be switching to 15w-50 racing oil next to see how the pressure goes up. mind you im over 300awhp and use it everytime i drive, so i can justify the need for a higher performing oil. for price, its hard to beat $25 a 5 quart jug at walmart. i despise that place, but damn do they got good deals on oil. only time i ever walk in the door.

and remeber people, you NEED the big filter. i use wix 51515, which is actually meant for an old 5 liter ford v8. you can spend big bucks on the mobil 1 mp-301(?) filter but wix is more than good enough. i recommend it in fact
