Airguard350 you hit the nail on the head. Yes they should match. Its insanity to run anything but a matching set of tires and wheels on an AWD vehicle. Even the same size tire i.e 235/45/17's from one manufacturer to the other are actually a physically different size tire. NO TWO DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS TIRE SIZES ARE PHYSICALLY THE SAME SIZE!!!! The torque split w/out slipping on a quattro is 50/50. So anyone running a mixed set is causing unnecessary wear and damage to the drivetrain. The two snows up front and the all seasons in the rear is f#%kin ridiculous trust me its not "good enough" Go one or the other not both. The sidewall characteristics are completely different and that affects cornering, straightline and breaking stability of the vehicle, as well its an especially stupid thing to do (all of a sudden Quattro guys don't care if the rear wheels assist in hazardous conditions?!?). The cars that have ESP constantly monitor the rolling speed of the individual tires and if all tires are spinning at different speeds i'm sure it confuses the **** out of the electronics. The varyance between a snow tire and an all-season or sport tire is even more exaggerated. If one tire is smaller than the other it means its spinning faster than the other taller tire. That varyance is going to prevent Quattro from performing like it should at the least, and eventually **** up the quattro system. If I had a dollar for every AWD owner (jeep cherokee owners are the worst by the way) who came to me when I worked at a repair facility with a little tear in their eye because "hey man I didn't know all the tires had to match" I'd have close to $100.00. Hey man, use your head for christ's sake! is what you should tell that guy. Or at least remember the car so you a friend or a loved one don't inherit the problems that guys creating. There's really no excuse for mis-matched tires if you can't afford matching tires trade your car in on one that you can afford tires for. I hope no-one on the AF has been unfortunate enough to purchase a used Quattro from someone who would do something that careless to their vehicle. People who don't understand the basic fundamentals of their cars is yet another reason why I didn't and will never buy a Quattro...a used Quattro anyhow.

Got a flat then, and used that wheel with a full-sized tire as a spare.

I wish I had a full sized spare. I might visit the local pick-a-part and see if I can find a decent sport wheel and maybe through my extra OEM Dunlop on it.
