b5 a4 conventional oil
i cant seem to find my recommended oil at my local auto stores, and if they do have it, i end up paying 9 dollars a quart. and on top of that, my filter is also unnecessarily expensive whenever i can find it. what could possibly happen if i run conventional oil through this car? Ive heard that it has small oil passages and sludge can build up, but honestly, how fast does that happen? also, can i run 10w-40 weight oil? anybody have any experience with lucas oil stabilizer? my car is a stock 2001 audi a4 1.8t.

If you're honestly asking this question, ie not trolling, I'm surprised you haven't heard about the engine recalls? Conventional oil = oil sludge = blown engine... and this was after the cars were a few years old. You really want to roll the dice now?
Castrol 5w-40 is what the Audi dealer uses, at least here in Canada. I pay 10 bucks for a NAPA Gold filter made by WIX. And I have the 2.8 v6 without the faulty pick-up screen and I always use synthetic.
Yeah, these cars are inexpensive to get into these days, but they are not just a Corolla with leather. They cost more to maintain period.

Suck it up and pay the $8.19/quart. It'll be well worth it.
I just did my oil last week and autozone had a special for 5 quarts of Castrol 5w40 synthetic, the vw 502.000 certified blah blah stuff and a bosch oil filter for $31.xx. Great deal IMO.
Can't go wrong with either Castrol Syntec (edge whatever it's called) 5w40 or Mobil 1 synthetic 5w40. Keep in mind the Mobil 1 will be listed as Turbo Deisel truck oil and in a different section of the store from the other oils.
Both of those oils were 8.19/quart.

Hey guys interesting thread.
Im learning about oils and, am happy to be corrected of course, but it is my current understanding that :
Synthetic oils were originally developed for use in very cold climates due to the need to have a low viscosity at low temperatures;
Viscosity: a 15W40 oil label tells you a lot. The 15W is the WINTER temperature rating.
For a better explaination, see: http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/
Is it because those audi motors with small oil galleries that low viscosity oil is required?
in my A4 2.6 motor I use a diesel oil that is SD(spark) rated and add Powerup to it.
An additive I suggest you look for is Powerup. Read about its specifications at:

You should all be using a Mobil or Castrol 5w - 40 SYNTHETIC oil.
Thicker oils, Lower viscosity..... cause more friction in the engine. Friction = heat, heat is good.... in freezing weather. Freezing weather.... Not cold weather.

Get the filter at a dealer. Its like 12 bucks retail. Get a drain ring while you're at it.
As for Lucas, might as well dump snake oil in there. Its useless. Just use the correct oil. Any full synth, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40 is fine. Castrol, Mobile1, and Elf are all great brands. Change it every 5k miles to avoid issues.

ok thanks alot for the replies. i checked out wal mart and surprisingly they have my oil AND my filter lol. i cant seem to find 5w-40 in mobil 1 synthetic, however 5w-30 is plentiful. i can get the oil and the filter for like 33 bucks. not bad.
