B5 2.8 quattro-vr6 engine swap
Hey everyone im new to the audiforum here and not really sure how things exactly work yet but im looking for some answers. I have a 99 a4 2.8 quattro, thats got bad rings and im looking to replace the engine. Firstly i thought that i was going to buy another 2.8 build it up (bore it out to a 3.0, pistons, rings...ect.) over the winter and supercharge it. Im ultimately looking for some crazy power. The only supercharger kit ive found is by PES and its $3500 and will boost the car up to 295hp (stock), ive got some extras done to it as well such as a milltek exhaust and a few other items. I cant really see myself spending that kind of money for only maybe getting 350hp and it being maxed out. So now my new consideration is doing a vr6 swap and building the **** out of the turbo but i really have no idea of what that entails, such as what parts id need to buy (wiring harness, new exhaust...ect) and how much that would cost me. I have seen some swaps with upwards to 600 horses and that what im looking to obtain. So please help me out and enlighten me on how i can accomplish this. Thanks.

Well vr6 would be the best way to go. You'd need: ECU, wiring harness, motor mounts, transmission, and a whole plethora of other **** I don't really care to think about right now. Not to sound like a dick but unless you have wads of cash to toss around then you'd probably be better off just buying a vr6 Golf or Jetta.
What makes a swap like this difficult is that the vr6 is transversely mounted whereas the 2.8 is longitudinally mounted. You'd probably also need an adapter to mate the tranny to the center diff so you could retain quattro.

Some VR6s are longitudinally mounted, but bolted up to such a radically different transmission as probably not to be helpful (T'reg/Q7/Cayenne... and even though they where a 'V6' badge, they are most certainly a VR6).
I'd rather have the V6 than the VR6 in that car anyways, to be honest.

Check out 034Motorsport - they pioneered the swap and built a 750hp time- attack car. Suffice to say you need a LOT - an engine transplant of that magnitude is one of those jobs that pretty much falls under "if you have to ask how to do it, don't try".

It will cost you about 2500 bucks just to get a VR6 to fit: engine carrier/mounts, oil pan, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and flywheel. Plus ECM, tuning, wiring harness, turbo, custom exhaust, FMIC, clutch... all for a measly 400 HP. You want more HP? You'll need to rebuild the VR6... another wad for parts.
And then you can have fun when your timing chain randomly lets go.
Believe it or not, it would be cheaper, easier, and more reliable to rebuild or replace your V6 and get a PES. Or, repair the car and trade up for a 1.8T or an S4. Even a V6TT swap would be better than a VR6.

Aside from checking out 034Motorsport, if you're really interested in a VR6 swap, you may want to skim through this build thread:
