Axial Crank movement! Need new engine?
So I hate to crosspost this, but I posted on the "general" forum hoping to catch more views from Audi owners all across the spectrum, but instead I think it was lost in the shuffle. I have a B5 A4 so here goes nothing.
I have a serious problem with my crank shaft, check out this post for the whole story:

Wow, that sucks, but also a used engine will cost nowhere near the price they quotes you. Ive never personally seen that happen, but that doesnt mean it doesnt. Where are you located? I'm sure we can find you an engine for way cheaper. And I'd look it over and probably end up just replacing the shortblock. I sold a stock working 058 shortblock for $200 fyi. So dont get too upset just yet. Im sure we can get you an 06A one for a good price.

Thanks for the input. I am in Cedar Rapids, Iowa which is about equidistant from Chicago, Minneapolis, St Louis and Omaha if I had to travel to get an engine with my pickup.
I assume 06A is part of the Audi PN for what I need? It is an AWM engine code if that makes a difference. I had another shop quote $3500 to replace the crank and bearings in my exisiting engine. I figured that I would just be delaying the inevitable if metal chunks are being forced up into the upper part of the engine.
The shop it is at now was hoping to find a used engine for less than $1000 he said, and then probably be around another $1000 to $1500 to install it.
I consider myself decently handy, but not "pull out and replace the engine" handy, so I am at the mercy of the mechanic.

Yes, 06A is the block your A4 has, as opposed to the older 1.8t's which were called 058. AWM is really only the head code you have, although they never came on anything but a 06a block.
Too bad you arent close to me, I'd find an engine for a deal and do the install for $500. Maybe someone near you will do the same, just ask around. In the meantime, i'll look for a block for you, and I'm pretty damn sure the head is fine. But have your mechanic look it over.
