Default AWM 1.8T Engine from 2003 Passat - Will it fit a 2001 A4

Someone I know is selling their '01 A4 with a blown engine.

I found an AWM engine from a 2003 Passat 1.8T, manual trans. Can I be sure this will fit the 2001 Audi A4 1.8T (which is also manual, and has the AWM engine).

Will there be any differences, or additional things required, or is it a direct swap?

Thanks in advance.

If they are both AWM's & both manuals it should work.

Thanks M5S5. Is there anything I should make sure is included with the engine, aside from just.. the engine? For example pumps, alternator, starter, etc, etc..?

Thanks!

If it were me i would do the timing belt & water pump. Might not be a bad idea to replace valve cover & chain tensioner gasket , fresh fluids.

Agreed - change the timing system, the gaskets mentioned above, coolant temp sensor, and every factory vacuum line (replace them with silicone lines). It's far easier to do this with the engine on a stand since you'll have clear access to everything. Upgrade the diverter valve and you should be good. For added good measure, new turbo oil lines would be great and if funds allow, a remanufactured turbo wuld be ideal to avoid having to potentially change it after the enginr is installed. Also, take the time to thoroughly clean and degrease the entire engine. A clean, shiny engine not only looks great, but also makes it very easy to spot leaks of any type once it's running.

Take the time to degrease the engine bay of the A4 as well and change out as many wearable items as you can.

Get anything that will come with the engine that you can and your budget allows. It never hurts to have a spare alternator or power steering pump if you can get them for next to nothing, especially for if you do the engine swap and need that other one because the current one isn't right. Also, I couldn't agree more with the two that posted above me, they know their **** and always have great advice !

Isn't it great the Passat shared so much with the A4!

Not as much as the TT shares so much with the golf, gti, and beetle.

If it were me id change far more than a pump and gasket or two. Since the engine will be completely out id do a full rebuild and inspection. This should include bearings, crank seals, head gasket and check for head warpage. Also new oil pump and oil pump chain tensioner as well as the obvious stuff like t belt. When you are done it should be a brand new engine. Another major thing you can do is desludge oil pan and valve cover. I'll give you a huge tip for taking sludge out too. Use zip strip. It pretty much melts the stuff away. If you aren't capable of doing this stuff yourself at the very least you should desludge.
