They were right. You have to manually connect it at the headunit. I don't know if Audi used shielded wire or not but you'll need to find a wiring diagram, and install rca connectors on the low level signal lines headed to the rear amp. That way you can connect it to your standard headunit preouts. I'm sure this has been done before on these cars. I would do some more research.
The other option is run speaker wire from your new headunit to the rear speakers, or install a small amp.

Don't know for sure if it will work with your car, but my point is that they should have one available for you to purchase.
