Apparently I need a new factory amp
Went to best buy today to have my new Kenwood receiver installed, everything went fine, looks great except one thing, only my front passenger speaker and tweeter are working. The technician said that its common for amps to go out on older Audi's. But my question is how could it drive any kind of music? To me, if it was fried, it would either work fine, or not at all. Any ideas? Where the hell can you find a factory amps anyways? any ideas?

i work at ccity and hear bullshit stories like this everyday at work. i can prolly figure it out for you but i need to know what they did first. did they rewire all speakers and do a factory amp bypass? but way more importantly, i need to know what harness they used. if its possible, scan your receipt and put a picture of it on here. if you dont have a scanner, list every line of the receipt and how much you paid for it. i mean, how likely is the amp going to go bad right after the install? not lvery...

When i got the car, the factory radio only played out of the passenger front speaker, Im really not that experienced with aftermarket radios, so i figured that this speaker problem was just a problem with the radio. I hadn't really thought of how they would hook it up so I just bought a kenwood cd player and had them install it. I'm not exactly sure if i have the bose system.. I know my 2 rear speakers are Nokia's but besides that im clueless as to what is going on.
As for how they did the install, i know they used a Volkswagen wiring harness which they charged me $21.99 and and a Volkswagen antenna adapter which they charged me $12.99. The technician said they would wire it through the factory amp, otherwise they would have to rewire each speaker, which would cost me 150 in labor for each pair of speakers....

because only the front left speaker played even with the factory radio, it leads me to believe you have a bad factory amp, even though usually if the amp is bad the whole thing quits working, but it is possible for individual channels to quit working independantly of each other. so what i would do is instead of rewiring each speaker (which we actually end up doing alot of the time at ccity, but its a hell of a lot cheaper) go on ebay or ask around for a used amplifier for that car and have them install it. install would be WAY cheaper on replacing the amp than rewiring all the speakers. the only other possible thing it could be is that they used the wrong wiring harness but in order for me to judge that i need you to tell me exactly which harness they used in the first place. please look on the reciept and list off all the part numbers. it would be the biggest help to me so i can figure out what the hell is goin on...

ok so i really dont know exactly what to make of this. the harness they used was for either an unamplified factory system a or a system where they rewire all the speakers and bypass the amp. the best way to figure out what is wrong is head back to best buy and tell them to order you a metra harness 70-1787. if they cant order it you can head to a ccity and they will. if you dont live by a ccity, order the harness of ebay and tell best buy to put it in. that harness in particular is a factory intergration harness which instead of eight wires to hook up the four speakers, it uses four rca plugs that run to the factory amp. after you try this get back to me. its basically its the only way to figure out if the amp is still good
