I bought it used for my 1996 A4, and of course it was not compatible (almost nothing is), but I suspect it will work fine with a 1997 or 1998. (All of the wiring plugs fit, and the physical form factor was correct, but only the fan speed control, not the temperature doors, worked.) This one has the built-in LEDs instead of plug-in incandescents. The old single twin-window display showing digital F or C temperature and a bar graph for fan speed. I see them on eBay for $40 to $100.
