Another thermostat issue
My 1997 Audi A4 1.8T FWD has developed new thermostat issue.
If the car is idling or at very low speed, the temp needle is in center-where it shud be.
But if I am on highway or I start heat, the temp needle comes down to point between the center and low. I changed the thermostat but nothing happened. Could you guys tell me where the ECT sensor is located? Also, is there any danger of overheating if the temp needle isnt going up?
Any ideas/help will be appreciated.

RE: Another thermostat issue
you problem is more than likely the coolant temp sensor, but it also be that your fan is not turning on and off like its supposed to and is stuck on. cause if your idleing and your fan is on, the temp gauge would stay in the middle cause the fan is the only thing pulling hot air from your radiator. but when your driving on the highway, you have alot of much cooler air being pushed on your radiator and the fan is still running, pulling the hot air off the radiator and therefore making the coolant temps drop. but like i said, its more than likely your coolant temp sensor

well on my 1.8t the coolant temp sensor is located on the drivers side in a coolant hose near the intercooler if i remember correctly. if you follow the coolant line from the radiator on the drivers side, you will see it. its the only sensor that plugs into the coolant hose.
