Unlike the 1.8, the coils on the 2.8l cannot be individually swapped, they are one unit. The best test you can do (even this is not 100% conclusive) is take a multimeter and measure the resistance between each coils output terminals, like in this pic. Resistance should be 8000 - 14000 Ohms

1996 - 1997 coil

1998+

To find out which cylinder is misfiring, start the engine. When it is running unplug the spark plug wire from each cylinder one by one and see if the engines behavior changes as you pull each one out (rpm should drop, engine should struggle a little). When you get to one that has little to no effect then you know you have a problem in that cylinder (could be caused by a bad coil, spark plug, or fuel injector).

I would check the resistance of the coils first, it's a quick test and you can buy a cheap multimeter for around $10 just about anywhere.
The engine should be fine.

From reading multiple audi forums and also the passat forums (same 2.8L V6) it seems that the coils are a common failure and will result in a loss of power and a rough running engine. Keep in mind, if one coil is bad then you still have to get the whole coil pack.

Though rare, rough running engine can also be caused by a blown headgasket, bent valves, bad fuel injectors, etc.....

these problems wouldnt be able to drive my car though right? headgasket would over heat and it never has bent valves motor wouldnt turn over.....back fuel injector would make it run lean no?

highly unlikely to be any of these? i got a feeling its the coil back

i made it to the autozone parking lot.... car stalled and wouldnt start smelt burning plastic opened up my hood adn seen a cracked coil pack with plastic pouring out pretty sure its a bad coil lol

btu the thing is when i went to scan the ecu it came up as error. 3x soo im not sure wat the codes where previous code was a misfire on cylinder 6 and i dont think the ecu could receive a signal from the motor if the coil isnt sending a signal any input?

im gonna post up pics as well...thnx

driving with a misfire melts your cats. your car has two cats @$250 each. you now probably need to spend another $500.

for future reference- a flashing CEL means dont drive the car or else risk damage.
