Default Air Recirculation Mode not working at Low Outside Temperatures

Hi,

I have a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T manual transmission car. Recently it developed a funny problem. The air recirculation mode ( A/C ) won't work if the outside temperature is low, say 3 degree or below. But when the outside temperature rises it just starts working again and the A/c/ Heater works fine with the recirculated air . I went to a mechanic and asked about this issue. but he really didn't know what's wrong here. So if anybody knows anything related to this, please reply.

Thanks
Prasmat

Thats normal, it does that because recirculated air that isnt dried by the air conditioner will cause your windows to fog up... it will recirculate the moisture your breathe off. If the temperatures are low enough that your air compressor wont turn on (37 degrees F, or a couple degrees above 0 degrees C), then it will prevent you from setting the air direction to recirculate.

Thanks guys for the fast replies.

So this means that in the winter I can never get into the Air recirculation mode if temperature is less than 0 degree. right?
Then I have to turn off the heater at all traffic stops otherwise bad air gets inside the vehicle. That just sucks.

I guess, Ive never noticed really crappy air quality when Im at a stop sign or stop light though. I would think the pollution levels inside the car barely change when you are at a stop light. Try taking a q-tip and run it along inside your vents, most cars have black dust... Our cars do have an cabin filter though, and you can buy different ones with a little better filtration, and some with a charcoal filter.
