air box mod. question
ok so i was looking at this mod for my air box http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=190394 my only question is what about dust and stuff getting in there if i was to drive on a gravel or dirt road and there is also a lot of construction going on around me is it a bad idea

actually those holes are pre air filter so anything that can get inside the new holes could almost as easily get inside your stock intake spot. the exception as i understand is water from the wheel wells getting in there but i believe it isnt usually an issue. plus, you could put some screen in there for added protection.

+1 ^. You're not bypassing the filter in any way, just adding more openings to get more air into your airbox faster. Only suggestion I would have if you're worried about dirt roads, get a K&N panel filter. That way you can just clean it rather than gettin a whole new paper filter.
As a side note, I've heard nothin but good things about the air box mod, as long as its done correctly and you take your time. It adds a little more aggressive sound, w/o the probelms associated with a full intake/cone filter (gas mileage, ICM and IAT)-and is not as big a pain in the ***.

Aside from noise, I don't see any advantage to cutting the airbox like that. It's been proven the stock airbox can support a lot more than a stock turbo can pull through it.

Stock paper filters. Or WIX, Mann, or Bosch

Just one of many tests. I've seen my fair share of destroyed MAFs with K&N filters. Most of them due to factory oiling on the filter or dusty conditions where the filter just couldn't cut it (usually winter driving with lots of sand on the road).
