actually those holes are pre air filter so anything that can get inside the new holes could almost as easily get inside your stock intake spot. the exception as i understand is water from the wheel wells getting in there but i believe it isnt usually an issue. plus, you could put some screen in there for added protection.

+1 ^. You're not bypassing the filter in any way, just adding more openings to get more air into your airbox faster. Only suggestion I would have if you're worried about dirt roads, get a K&N panel filter. That way you can just clean it rather than gettin a whole new paper filter.

As a side note, I've heard nothin but good things about the air box mod, as long as its done correctly and you take your time. It adds a little more aggressive sound, w/o the probelms associated with a full intake/cone filter (gas mileage, ICM and IAT)-and is not as big a pain in the ***.

GL!

If you're worried about dirt getting in the intake, it is best avoid K&N panel filters. Paper filters flow the same rate and actually offer more dust protection than a greased-up K&N.

Aside from noise, I don't see any advantage to cutting the airbox like that. It's been proven the stock airbox can support a lot more than a stock turbo can pull through it.

Stock paper filters. Or WIX, Mann, or Bosch

Just one of many tests. I've seen my fair share of destroyed MAFs with K&N filters. Most of them due to factory oiling on the filter or dusty conditions where the filter just couldn't cut it (usually winter driving with lots of sand on the road).

Hmmm good point guys, I was just thinking along the lines of saving money not buying new paper filters, didn't take into account the oil and that stuff. Thanks for the info!

ITG air filters, i would say, would be a better air filter if your on dirt roads a lot. 3 layers of foam and still way easy to clean.
