Additional Key?
Hello,
Brand new to Audi's, but not to cars or forums. I have read through much of the FAQ's and info threads as well as searching, and I am learning alot, but haven't found the answer to my first question.
GF has a 98 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro. It only came with a single key. The key has a big head on it but no buttons. I want to get an additional key for the car.
I called the dealer and they said they have to order a key and it will be $188 if it has a chip or $66 if no chip. They order it from the VIN. I would like to think I can get it done cheaper than the dealer.
1) Does this key have a chip in it or not?
2) How much should I expect to pay from a locksmith for this key?
3) If I need a code for this key, where is it found on this car? Or can I find it by VIN?
4) Anything else I should know when getting this new key?
Thanks,
Adam

that car does not have a chip in the key. you can buy blank keys on ebay or similar sites for like $20 and find a locksmith that does laser cutting (another $10-20) and he can just replicate the current key.
if your buying it from a dealer i think they can run the VIN and get the key code, but there is also a code on the key part itself. if your just having it copied, you dont need any codes.

Great- thanks for the reply.
Sounds like I should be able to get it done for half the dealer cost, which is what I expected. Probably less if a locksmith has an aftermarket company made key blank, which they probably do I would think.
Thanks again,
Adam
