acceleration and power problem with 98 2.8

so one shop said they would clean it and readapt it for 90$ however the guy who i already brought it to said he thinks i need a new one which will be 500$ now the question is do i try and clean it for way less or just buy the new part

If you have a VAG-COM, you can clean and readapt it yourself for <$10. Just get some MAF or brake cleaner (something that cleans but doesn't leave a residue). Pull it off, give it a good clean, and readapt using VAG.

yeah i tried taking it off but in the 2.8 its a bitch cause its in the most uncomfortable place

Are you sure? Take off everything between the airbox and that intake elbow on the throttle body. Then there are just 4 tamper-proof torx screws that hold the MAF in place. You can back those off with a good pair of pliars (they might have 4 lbs of torque on them), clean the MAF, and while it's drying take the tamper-proof torx bolts to a good hardware store with a good selection of metric stuff. Replace them with something else and put it back together.

i already put a new maf and air intake in (when i out it the kid took the stock one off and i dont have the stock one) so anyways i finally got to the tb (was a pita cause on the 2.8 there is no room) and its pretty gunked up it got dark out so ill clean and put it back together tomorrow and try and get a guy off kijiji to come to my house with the software to do the realingment for like 20$
