Default ABS Module Fix

i am getting an error with my ABS module. The ABS and BRAKE lights are coming on and blinking with a tone. So i scanned with a VAG-COM getting:
Code:
                Address 03: ABS Brakes
Control Module Part Number: 8E0 614 111 A
  Component and/or Version: ABS/EDS 5.3 QUATTRO D00
           Software Coding: 0273004284
            Work Shop Code: BB 24334
1 Fault Found:

01203 - Electrical Connection between ABS and Instrument Cluster
        03-10 - No Signal - Intermittent
I know that this is a common error, and is misleading that the ABS control module needs to be fixed. so the question is, What if I don't fix? Is this really bad or will i just not have ABS? Can i drive the car with the module taken out (using the guide)? Has anyone done the fix themselves. I am pretty handy with a soldering iron, and i am an electrical engineer (almost, last year in school).

You might try unplugging the connections from the ABS module. Make sure
they are clean and reconnect. If that doesn't help, do the same with the
instrument cluster. You can drive with the ABS module removed, no ABS.

Check your fuses - I think its #7 and #13..maybe but check your manual

Verify that the #15 socket on the ABS harness has power. Pull the harness off your ABS module inside the engine bay - there is a small 15 molded into the harness. Use a volt meter to verify that there is current going through this lead.

If both of those are good then you need it rebuilt

There is a guy on AZ that rebuilds them - check the classifieds - He charges $50 but don't know if there is anyone that has used him yet. I'm getting mine back from Modulemaster.com tomorrow, but they are $220 + shipping it to them. But, they also have a 5 year warranty, and if they screw it up they won't just say "woops sorry".

Modulemaster ftw. I did that for my A6 and had it out and in under 5 days. Easy as hell to replace too. They have an online DIY video

Good to hear that they stand behind their work. For the cost of it, it sounds totally worth the price if the module is the cause of the problem.

It was a good experience for me since the lights had been worrying me for 3 months and the dealers wanted $1,500 for the job so $230ish was a relief for me. And the chick answering the phones was a lot more knowledgeable than the Audi tech idiot. If mine ever goes out I wouldn't hesitate to send it in, although its a more common problem on A6's appearently.

sounds like a part that you can get out of one of the 'parting out' threads in the classifieds for a lot less, shipped!
talk to devils4 . hes got a bunch of audis, i havent gotten my parts yet but hes been pleasant to deal with.

Well the module is rebuilt, it isn't a complete new part. So its actually fixed and warrantied and a part that you get from a "part out" can go bad again at any moment. And it might be cheaper depending on the seller but I doubt it'd go for under $100 used either way.

I've repaired dozens of these and can do it for around $100. send me an email if interested: sidespar at yahoo dot com.

So just to verify, if i take this unit out, the car will still be safe to drive, just be lacking ABS (which it probably is already).
