A4 Vacuum sound???
01 1.8t b5 is making a strange sound coming from under the air box. Thinking its the secondary air pump. Sounds like a shop vacuum. My concern is that it will continue to run after the car is off. It will turn off after a few minutes then turn back on then off. I do not want this to run down my battery while the car is not running. Im thinking maybe a stuck relay. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on. There are no cel's if that helps. Ill try and get a sound clip up

Just went out to check on the car after atleast an hr and while I was standing there it kicked on again for about a min and then shut off. Disconnected the battery so it would drain.
Someone has got to know something about this.

It will throw a cel if you simply unplug the pump or relay; avoid that if you can. It won't affect the performance of the car, as it is a useless system as colony said, but driving with a persistent cel is irksome, even though you'll know what caused it, you'll be forever wondering if some new code has popped up but you don't know for sure cuz you know the p0411 is still there from the SAI being disconnected.
I know all this cuz I had this exact same thing happen, and did get a dead battery out of it from the pump running all night. I'm still battling the issue with the cel, which I've narrowed down to cracked piping somewhere, having replaced the relay, checking that the pump is actually functioning, and checking all the connections, but as far as it not shutting off it is a 95% chance that the relay is sticking. There are two ways to deal with it; the first one is free. All you need to do is take the relay out with the car off, key out of ignition, give the relay a few shakes and plug it back in and see if that helps. I've heard that that will sometimes take care of the issue but its not a guarantee; a good place to start regardless cuz if it works, then you got out of buying a new relay- which is the second option and will cost you between $30-$40.
The relay is easy to find, its in the same housing as the ECU in the engine bay, the ~12"x12" box right in front of the steering wheel. Just open the cover off that, there are IIRC 8 screws and two of them are less than readily accessible so you either need small hands, or need to take the rain tray off. Once the cover is off, the relay is the only other thing in the box besides the hard-drive looking case that is the ECU, its a little ~1"x1"x1" cube, light gray in color, can't miss it.
Good luck!
