Default A4 gearbox plug/bolt problem!

Hi, i have just fitted a gearbox to my 1998 a4 tdi 5spd manual rhd. I have removed a bolt/plug from the drivers/ o/side of the box thinking it was the filler plug!
I have now found the correct filler plug and have checked the oil etc,.
The problem i now have is: Have i done any damage by removing this plug?
I have attached a couple of pics hoping that someone may identify it and tell me what it is for and if i can safely replace it ?

Regards and thanks for looking,
Alun J

Well , does it go back in easily? If it goes in back & it shifts good you will probably be good. If you have a difficult time getting it back in it is possible something inside has come out of place.
Looking at it it looks like it holds something in place though.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! No i have not tried to put the bolt/plug back in as would like to know what it is for and if i may cause damage by replaceing it?
If i cant find what it,s for i will put it back in ( if it goes ) and hope for the best!

Just remember to not try & force it in. How difficult was it coming out?

To me i think it's shaped like that because the pin at the end possibly holds something in place like internal shift linkage.
