Exclamation Is the a4 b5 worth it?

Whats up guys? Im new to the audi world...or working on it at least! I have been looking at them all over and think i have found the one im getting. I cant seem to find a 5 speed anywhere around here but the ones that i have found are the automatic with the slap shift.
This is the one im more than likely picking up tuesday just have to sign papers.

2001 Audi A4 1.8T quattro, $7,995 - Cars.com

Here are my questions..
1. I have been reading about transmission problems with this car. Is it a frequent problem in this model and is it preventable.
2. Is it worth it? I have been wanting to get an audi for a while now but the more i read about it the more problems i seem to read about.
3. Is the engine sludge problem also a very common one? and how do i know if this car has suffered from engine sludge in the past.

I am trading in my 2003 nissan xterra on this car and a little worried that the a4 wont be as reliable as my xterra has been but yet again the a4 has about 64000 miles compared to the 118000 that my xterra has.

Basically im just looking for opinions and suggestions about making this deal and problems you have ran into with your a4.

Thanks!

That price seems super super high even for such low mileage. I'd be more willing to pay that price if it were a manual. You could almost buy an S4 in as good of condition for that price.

Basic things to look for: Documentation of work, specifically the timing belt.
Someone else can give you more information on your other questions.

I have the full car fax but there is nothing about the timing belt or water pump in there.
I have kinda had my heart set on the a4 but im just concerned that there are alot of problems with them? Are there and what should my main concerns be?

Are you in Washington, PA? I'm in Cal. Anyways, exactly what Skythe said. The price is a little steep but it does seem like a nice ride. For things like the timing belt, water pump, etc. you'll have to go through the service records to find all that stuff out. If the car wasn't serviced at Audi/VW dealers after it was bought, then nothing will be in the service records. At that point in time ask for receipts but at 64k all the timing belt, water pump stuff isn't a huge priority until about 70k-85k miles.

I though that timing belt is every 70-85k or 9 years which ever comes first, the car is 11 years old so its due for the job...

That is a nice A4 with low mileage and so on. You will have a hard time finding them with such low mileage but you have to keep in mind that service will be due soon. This car is a bit over priced though, for 8k you could pick up a 6 speed S4 with a bit over 100k... Or for that much money you can get a B6 with like 100k on it

seems a bit steep to me, I would pay about $5500-6000 for that car.
