Default A4 2.6 SE Auto Tranny jerk problem

Hi Newby to site

I own an A4 2.6 SE Auto transmission '96 model.

I have noticed recently that when put into reverse, the car jerks into reverse gear! All other gears appear Ok, slight jerk in 2ndbut otherwise all else is cool.

Sometimes it just sits there and does not do anything. I then have to put back in neutral then back in revers to get car to move.

Mileage = 54,000

Has anyone had a similar problem? Any ideas on possible cause?

Aiming to take it in to Audi as local mechanics have not been able to find any probelms but suspect its mehcanical as opossed to electrical fault.

Hmmm. Is the check engine light coming on? Not real familiar with other year A4's but to share some experience...I have a '98 A4 1.8 with Auto. The transmission is electronically controlled by a computer located in the passenger floorboard. If you have ever gotten water in the car, it will flood this transmission controller. The banging into gear, non-gears and only getting 3rd gear while in DRIVE are all indicative of the transmission controller having problems and/or codes being set.

It may seem like a "transmission" problem but consider an electrical/computer related problem.

Hi Skonka

Thanks for info. don't think check engine light is coming on.

Run car into Audi today and all they said was that they were unable to find any electronic fault using diagnostic computer. This is now 3rd electronics diag done.

Their recommendation was for a gear box oil change and then they reported that they could investigate further then by dropping gear box opr sump(something like that)?!?

it could be the tranny oil. Perhaps you're low, have a leak. That could cause all kinds of bad shift problems. If you have low pressure in your tranny oil then shifting could skip, jerk, or even refuse to shift sometimes.

Could be a bad syncro (pray to god that it is not - can you say 5 grand? heh... don't mean to scare you - they rarely ever go bad)

Hi brrman

Thanks for the info At this stage all info is good.Booking car in to get gear box mechanically checked friday.

Hope and pray its not as bad as that, will update with findings.

Just seems funny that Audi did not know if symptoms were tranny oil definitely.

Will await outcome of garage checks(taking it to Auto tranny specialist)

I know that this may sound odd, but in todays world of electronic cars maybe not. I had the same problem about a year ago and after checking everything under the sun the dealer found that it was caused by the ignition switch. They replaced it and I haven't had a problem since (knock on wood)

an ignition switch cause faulty shifting? I will not say its impossible, but unlikely. The only electronics that interface with the shifting mechanism are the tranny ecu and the magnetic switch in the lever.

I guess its possible that something was shorting out because of the ignition switch. Its also possible that the dealer fixed the real problem as well as taking you for a new ignition switch...

yeah who knows these days tho...

Hi guys

Finally picked up the car and it is working OK.

Workshop reported that fault was due to a worn gasket in gearbox valve body(looked like a thin sheet of metalwith lots of holes in it). apparently this gasket acts like a strainer betweent he two parts and as some of the holes were worn, the flow of ATF was not as it used be causing jerky tranny shifts.

This has now been removed and tranny is smooth again. will continue to monitor car, but so far after a whole day of driving it is still running smooth.

God is good. :-)
