Of course you need the engine running, you need to read the live sensor data, not trouble codes. Go through the measuring blocks and see what kind of data you have available before starting it so that you'll actually have time to see what's going on before it shuts off.

Now the car will not run at all although it did try a little indicating that I have spark. I should have mentioned the following in my original post. When I went to rescue my car ( and my sister!) the first thing I did was take the gas cap off, there was no release of pressure like you would normally get? Maybe my fuel pump has given it up? How do I check the fuel pump ?? If this were an old Carbureted car I would know just what t do...

Ok I will push the car back over to the side of the house and hook her up, crank it over and see what happens. I think my fuel pump has either failed or is not being told that its services are required... Thanks for your Patience...
