Default '99 A4 2.8 Oil Pan woes

Got a small leak around my oil pan, thinkin about just replacing it myself in my driveway but before I do I want to make sure I have all the information right.

Jack the car up
Unbolt the 4 bolts on the swaybar
Unbolt 10mm nuts on the oil pan
replace?

Is that it? Any why can't my local parts shop get a source for my damn oil pan gasket...do I need to go to the dealer for it?

yeah, it's pretty straight forward...

1-make sure pan is cool/luke warm tu the touch.
2-drain the oil
3-remove fron sway
4-remove oil pan

oh, and you should prolly replace the gasket as well (if you weren't going to), I think I have heard of people also using a dab of liquid copper gasket as well ( I could be wrong tho)

if you have the time and patience you may want to try to locate exactly where the leak is coming from, it could just be your gasket...

have fin!

I just did mine because of a leak and one of the techs on here suggested I use that black silicone that glass shops use for windshields and it worked great, no more leaks. It isn't so sticky that my oil pan won't come off either.

Don't put your sway bar back on!

Haha I would leave it off if it were my car...it's my girlfriends sisters. I should have been more clear, my original intentions were to replace the gasket not the oil pan. For the 2.8, do I need to jack the motor up a little to get the pan to clear? Or is there no brace there to block my way?

No, once you're under there, you'll see that as soon as the swaybar is moved the pan will just drop straight down. I can do mine in 20 minutes, off and back on again. That's with airtools though.

Just a question...I have a B5.5 passat 1.8t (02 passat), and I was wondering if it was just as easy to disconnect the front sway on mine as it is her sisters A4?

You pan may stick to the gasket good. It took me sometime to drop mine off, since I didn't realize the gasket was one piece for the screen and the pan. Anyway, don't be discourage if the pan does not drop straight away. Double and triple check that all bolts are undone, and use a little force.
