Default 98 audi a4 2.8l Transmission

Hi how are you doing. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 1998 audi a4 DRN and the DTV transmission is. Im wondering if the bellhousing is different. I assume that the gear ratio is different. Please let me know all the info you can thanks. I need a tranny and i have a good DTV complete drivetrain wondering if i can swap it into my other car
thanks
josh

I cannot comment on DRN vs. DTV (I don't know the details of the DTV).

The 96 A4 2.8 quattro auto had (for unknown) reason a DRN installed. It is supposed to have a CJP. Since the DRN was not working (turns out all friction packs were worn; mechancial parts all good), I changed it and installed a CJP.

I could NOT find ANY difference between DRN and CJP.

Both, the DRN and the CJP ran with the same trans module (I never changed it).

If your TCM matches (location is under the passenger seat carpet), I venture a guess it would work.

I have the DRN housing sitting here if you need anything off it to compare with your DTV (PM me if you need anything).

I would also check the 2 round connectors going from the trans to the engine/PCM. One comes from the internal valve body, the other from the multi-function range switch (gear indicator) (8 pin or 10 pin).

You should be able to find gearing information by looking up the detailed specs for the car by year and engine size.

Default Gear Ratio 1998 1.8 vs. 2.8

I found the following gear ratio. Comparing them, you'll note that only the final drive gear ratio is different (3.3 for the 2.8, 3.7 for the 1.8T), the trans itself are the same.

Gear ratio of 1998 Audi A4 1.8T auto:

Default 1998 Audi A4 auto trans codes used

These are the various trans codes for 1998 A4 auto trans.
You also should check the torque converter for fit (diameter, thickness, input shaft, flywheel bolt pattern).

is it possible to put the 1.8 tranny in the 2.8 car since it has a higher gear ratio to get more low end out of it?

Yes you can but if it is a TIP you need to make sure the transmission controller will work and you need to make sure the final drives are the same.
