Default 98 A4 2.8L cruise control issue

I have a 98 2.8L manual transmission A4 and the cruise control will not work. The indicator on the dash does not show. I have checked all the fuses and also checked the cruise module box behind the glove box. If anyone knows what other parts I should check that would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a whole slew of bookmarked sites on this cruise control issue, as mine hasn't been working at least since the previous owner had the car. So far I repaired the CC switch itself to no avail. Anyways...

What do you mean by having already checked the module? If you haven't tried swapping in a known good/working unit, I would recommend doing so. You don't even need to remove existing module, just lower glove box, unplug existing and plug in new/different unit.

After much researching, worrying, and procrastinating i just did this on my 98 2.8 this week (with cheap used unit off ebay)... within 5-10 minutes of opening package from mail my cruise was working just fine.

Yea I'm not sure what "checked the module" means either. There are several points where that system can fail. I've had to sort through that on a B5 and on a C5. This write up takes you through the whole system rather than assuming the problem is in one spot. Very good.

I went through a bunch of trouble-shooting, some time after 2005 when I bought my '96 with a non-working cruise control. As mtroxel says, there are plenty of places where the system can break down. I powered the vacuum pump and solenoid dump valves throught the disconnected module's connector, checked for speed-signal, brake light switch signal, power and control signals from the stalk switch (which I also dissembled and cleaned). In the end, I bought a used module from a guy parting out an A6, and it's worked ever since. At the begining of year we bought a house about 45 freeway miles from my work, and I really appreciate having the cruise working.

I have since read that more than a few people have re-soldered the three red-colored capacitors on the module's circuit board, and had sucess.
