97 Audi A4 1.8 Starts/Won't Start/HELP

you havnt even told us what year your car is or engine your car has, transmission, etc.
bosh starters are OEM, you can find other names cheaper but quality isnt guaranteed on those.
is that repeatable or did it just happen to happen once? how did you disable the alarm?
how was it towed? flatbed or by two wheels? is the car quattro or FWD?

I will get out of the car, reach in through the driver side window and start it - and it starts
Was towed to a different shop this morning

Audi A4 1.8 Start/Won't Start Problem
Latest in the sauga- mechanic says in 20 years he hasn't experienced this type of problem.
New Bosch starter, new ignition switch, new electical wire running from starter to ignition.
Car has a critter that is hard to find. Now mechanic disabled alarm and believes there is some kind of motion sensor / alarm glitch that is causing the car to not start at times.
He even experienced the reaching in the window to start the car thing. However, all of these weird quirks are never consistent.
Oooouch!

'not consistently' means it is not repeatable, just random and intermittent. if it was repeatable that would mean you found a certain scenario where the car does or does not do it.
your mechanic may be a good general mechanic, but if he is not specifically experienced with Audis hes not going to know the little things that may not be obvious. for instance, there would be zero reason to put a larger cable on the starter unless the original cable was overheating or visibly damaged. your problem is probably related to the alarm system not allowing the car to start. it could be a bad alarm module, door sensor, motion sensor or door lock. without any other information that was the first thing that came to mind. you can not easily test these systems without audi/vw specific computer tools.

A4 1.8 Start/Won't Start Problem Solved
To all who have replied - thank you!
The problem turned out to be the engine was grounded properly. Apparently the car is grounded in various locations under the hood and one of the locations wasn't connecting all of the time - sometimes it would start and sometimes it wouldn't. If you were facing the front of the car looking toward the windshield and pushed the left front corner of the car, and someone else was inside turning it over, it would start every time. Weird stuff.
Hope this helps anyone who might have a similar critter in their Audi.
By the way, I am a woman and don't know car lingo - so excuse my descriptions and explanations.
