97 a4 burning oil bad all of a sudden!!
Hi!! im new here and i have a 97 A4 1.8T and i let me boyfriend drive my car to work (which its about 65 miles away) instead of driving his big gas eating truck and since he has been taking it my car has developed a bad problem. The oil temp went way up while he was driving it so he put a quart of oil in and then it was fine, the next day on his way home it did the same thing again So he put another quart of oil in it and it was fine, i got in it to drive to the store and i noticed that it was very smokey so i gave it some gas and a ton more smoke poured out of the exhaust. I dont know why it would do this all of a sudden. When i was drivin it it was only 5 ten mintues away but i also drove back and forth to portland and there was no problem. Should i not drive it at all now?? does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with it? I just got the car adn paid cash for it about a month and a half ago. Please help me, i want my car to be back to running great

so no check engine light then? did you check the dip stick to actually see how much oil is in there?
what kind of oil did ur boyfriend put in? do u know what kind of oil the previous owner used?
based from what i can tell, u should probably get an oil change using synthetic oil and changing the oil filter. Hopefully that will do the trick.

if the turbos out then you will see black smoke coming out of the tailpipe like nmocci says but im just hoping its not and you have to much oil in there and really bad oil sludge.

You didn't mention him or you checking the oil level. Sounds like he was adding oil without checking the level, and then adding more oil. Too much oil will cause the engine to smoke. Check the fluid level and if it's normal and still smoking it's probably the turbo. If it has tons of miles on it it could be bad piston rings but thats doubtful.
