97 A4 1.8TQM RANDOMLY does not start, only clicking from starter
My A4 randomly would not start for some reason. I replaced the battery, alternator and starter and still the same thing. About 60-70% of the times it would start up just fine but the rest of the times I only hear slight clicking, I am guessing from the starter solenoid, and nothing happens. The battery is definitely good as the car starts just fine a couple of minutes after it doesn't start and vice versa. I am guessing it's a bad connection somewhere or a bad cable but I don't know where exactly to look for this weak spot. Is there a relay that could be getting stuck at times? I know there is a direct cable from the battery to the starter and then that cable goes somewhere else from the starter. There is also a small cable that also connects to a pin on the starter. Is that just a ground connection? I am really frustrated with this issue and I am afraid to drive my car as I am afraid I will have to push it to start it in gear in case it doesn't start and I am out somewhere. I want to fix this once and for all. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

its prolly a bad battery connestion. i would get a mechanic to look at it. they will prolly do it 4 cheap and fixing it shouldnt be too expensive either. just dont go to the dealer. they will charge you out the ***

When the car doesn't start, do the lights dim or the dash lights go out? Does it seem to happen more when the car is warm or cold?

The lights are off when I try to start it. It doesn't matter if the car is warm or cold. Sometimes I would drive it around, stop it, shut it off, and then try to start it back up and it would only click and not start. It's about even when cold and warm.

yeah, it could be the ignition, and theres a recall on that part. so u can go get it replcaed 4 free. i would hurry too. my ignition went out in the start position and killed my starter too. when it happened 2 me i had similar symptoms only mine all happened in a couple of minutes.

No, I've never had problems with the key getting stuck in the ignition nor has the starter kept working after I had started the car. I will look into that too but I have a feeling it's something simple like a bad ground somewhere.
