'97 2,8 30 valve issues: Auto Transmission problems
Hi guys,
I recently bought an A4 2,8 with auto transmission with tiptronic.
the box is only working in emergency mode, and all the indicator lights on the display are burning all together constantly.
It also seems the box is leaking oil as I can smell the hydraulic oil regulary after a drive with the car
Besides resolving the leaking problem, wich is obvious, what can be the problem here?
Where to look, what to do?
Can the box go into emergency mode because off low oil level?
Is there a way I can reset the transmission myself?
(for the time being I don't have a VAG Com yet)
Regards
Luke

Yes, low fluid can lock the gearbox into limp mode. First thing I would do is top off the transmission to the proper level (be sure to look up the proper way to do so), and see if it works correctly with the right amount of fluid. If it does, track down your leak and handle it. If not, the leak may not be your biggest concern - worst case you may need a transmission. I'd make sure it's functional with fluid before trying to fix what could be a failing gearbox.

Hi Devil,
Also here, thanks for the reply.
Had the underside of the car today powerwashed so hopefully tomorrow I can have a clearer idear about where or how it is leaking.
I picked up the car about 1500 km from where I live and drove it home in this limb mode, and currently still is in this mode. The box seems to work reasonbly well in this mode although gearchanges / revs not very smooth.
My first automatic car, so no experiences, but I can feel it is not perfect.
Will try to top it up first to see what it does.
Fiured out one needs a spesial filling tool to hang in the carter. Any idears to improvise this "walking stick" filler?

You don't need the tool. All you have to do look up in there with a flashlight, see the hole, snake a hose in there and fill till it comes out. Of course there's all the other stuff about having the ATF at the right temp, etc. And the temp matters, as that stuff expands quite a bit as it heats up.
