Exactly.

How many miles are on your car?

A transmission could run you about $2k plus labor.

I had the EXACT same problem with my 96. Turned out to be the clutch packs in first gear.

Solution: tranny swap. I found a used one on craigslist with 70K miles on it... CJP trannies are expensive!

Approx. 98k miles. $2k? Ouch!

If it comes to that, I may just drive it as is. Am I doing damage? Again, no unusual sounds or smells. It just needs to get going in '2' before switching to 'D'.

Took her to see Mr. Transmission today. The mechanic said it's most likely the 1st set of clutches, he can hear it slipping, and that would explain why I can only get her started in 2nd gear. I felt reluctant to ask if it could be a fluid issue, cause it just seems very unlikely that fluid was cause an issue like this.

My mechanic disagrees however. He thinks it's the solenoid.

Sound about right?

My mechanic took it for a spin and did a scan today. He's getting a Brake Light Switch Code and a Coolant Temp code.

I'm pretty sure that the coolant temp code is cause the thermostat is stuck. But the brake light code he seems to think is causing the tranny issue.

Any thoughts?

Brake Light 'Implausible Signal' is normal.. next time have him hit the brake pedal before scanning, it'll go away.

He really show know Audi's, or take it to someone who does.
