Hello guys. I've got a 96 Audi quattro a4, 5 speed. I just got this car in a trade and cant figure this out for the life of me.

Problem: When I am in gear and going down the road i hear a very strong "clicking" from the front drivers side tire, and honestly it almost sounds like an engine knock. The thing is though, it only does it while im in gear, if i press the clutch in the noise goes away instantly and completely. It goes into every gear just fine and doesnt jump out of gear or anything like that.

Other known issues with this car: Bad starter (Wont engage and start the car, have to push start it.) and the passenger side engine mount is very bad.

We took the wheel off of the car and checked everything over in that area, Drive shaft has no play, ball joints seem fine, etc. Im completely new to Audi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Sounds like a worn clutch throw-out bearing.

 

If its coming from the wheel area, I would suspect a CV joint getting ready to die.

 

cv joint...i replaced mine the drive is smoother and no more clicking.

 

It sounds more like its coming from the back half of the tranny if that makes sense...

 

Sounds like a CV joint - an inner one. Does the car wander at all at highway speeds?

 

It does actually "wonder" at about 70-80 (speedometer doesnt work atm). What would that be? We had it on 4 jack stands, put it in 3rd gear, and let it run while we both got underneath the car and it sounded like it was inside the tranny...
