96 A4 Shifer replacement
So I recently purchased a 96 A4 at an auction. Everything mechanically checked out, was able to drive it home and to work for a few days but after about 4 days of this used car I realized I had lost the ability to shift into 1st and 2nd gear. After being completely frustrated I pulled off the shift ****, boot, and peered in the housing. The ball no longer is secured in the ball housing, it can drop an inch below and be pulled above with lots of slop and play. So I figured I could get a hold of a foreign auto car guy and see if he had some experience and parts to help me out but to no avail. I am being told to go to the junkyard to extract what normally isn't a part that would go bad. Unfortunately the closet yards have very few Audi's and the ones they have are 98-99. I am wondering if the shifter assembly is interchangeable between all the B5 years and models? I am sure I would have a lot more luck finding a VW Passat? I am not sure what to do!!

Not a question a lot of guys here have had to answer I think. This will at least get you down the road a bit. You can back into the part numbers you need here. Then Google it. Or if your Passat idea works, there is at least one Passat forum (PassatWorld?) that has a parts listing there too.
