Default 5 hours for oil pan gasket replacement?

Hey guys, does 5 hours for an oil pan gasket replacement seem about right? I'm just double checking. If 5 hours is the "standard time", I'm ok with paying that. Again, I'm just double checking.

Can anyone with experience chime in on this?

why are you changing it? 5 hours is $500 bucks, +++

you won't get out of there for less than$900.

well, with porsches, what's the diff? you either work on them or you don't.

IF you had 2.8 you could do it in your driveway , yes, getting the oil pan off and the oil pan gaskets on a 1.8 are a PITA...so 4-5 hours is correct.....

Not me! My indy...

Also, my indy used a "gasket sealer" silicone looking material. I.e. - there wasn't an actual "gasket" used. Does this seem right? I've seen actual gasket parts for our cars. But instead, they used silicone to act as the sealer.

Yep, that's correct. 06a blocks don't use an actual gasket. My valve cover is leaking as well but I've been putting it off because I don't feel like dealing with it myself and I don't feel like paying someone else to do it for me....

Was just thinking someone around here was missing . Bring it up here one day with the parts and some good beer. I bet we make that 5 hours happen pretty fast.

Might actually take you up on that when the weather breaks, I'm tired of cleaning oil off of everything.

It sucks, i just cleaned all the burnt oil off my jetta from the bad turbo. Makes it look so much better, and just unplugging wires or hoses doesn't require you to wash oil off of everything your wearing.

Wow! 5 hours to change the oil pan gasket on a 1.8???

The first day I owned my '98 2.8l V-6, I hit a dip in the road down the street from my house a little too fast and cracked my oil pan. I think it took me about 45 minutes to change out my whole oil pan and gasket.

Thats because you dont have to drop the subframe on a 2.8. Just to be a dick....45 minutes is too long
