Default 2001 A4 engines

I understand that the 1.8t engine was upgraded sometime during the 2001 model year. How can I determine which engine I have? The last 6 digits of my VIN are in the 400000 range.

What are the differences between the engines? I tried to search for 2001 a4 engines and found a lot of threads but couldnt find the details that I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Its not a chip, its a larger turbo. They upgraded from the K03 turbo to the K03s. At least thats my understanding. If you have an internal water pump then you know you've got the awm motor, or you can look on the head to find the awm stamp, thats the easiest way.

No, it's more boost.

Hey - the paint is pretty good too! Do these engines have a timing belt or a timing chain? Is this the same engine that has the 5 minute timing belt sticky? (and a link to a very impressive DIY?)

surely I'm asking old questions. I must not being using search properly.

Thanks for the info.

The turbo changes are quite minor and some people have said that the 2001s didn't even get that updated turbo. But the changes would not add that much power. It's tuned for a bit more boost.

It's a timing belt. The procedures are the same for the B5 1.8t's.

The easiest way to find out what the code is for the engine/tranny/rear diff is to look inside the spare tire well in the trunk.

The 2001 does have the K03s which is a slightly different design. Both the compressor and turbine wheels are bigger so it does make additional power and boost.
