Default 2000 1.8 brake pad wear indicator light

I've been getting in intermittent brake pad wear indicator logo in the OK box recently. I have recently done front rotors and new plug in pads. Just for my education, what causes the idiot light to come on? Does excessive wear cause the circuit to open, or close? Because if this doesn't go away I'm going to straight wire the plug down at the bearing housing to close it. And, I am assuming that the rears only have physical noise makers. I've changed pads a bunch but never really paid attention to how the wear sensors work. Thanks

They are normally open and close the circuit by wearing against the rotor.. Pretty self explanatory if you take your disk off and have a look

i do believe the circuit is normally closed, and opens once the pad wears enough. you could throw a paper clip in to close the circuit and the light should go off

there are no wear sensors in the rear

Your right.. I wouldn't bypass it though as it is a nice feature that isn't very costly to maintain
