Says who? Have you done it?
Ok.
For 1100 for the motor, there is no doubt in my mind you could get all of the parts to do the swap from a junyard (there are quite a few here) for under 1400.
I can turn a wrench, and have PERSONALLY done swaps far more complex than this on a budget. I have assisted in many off the wall, very technical swaps. All of them were critisized and told would never be on budget. So, I take this comment with a grain of salt. I know it can be done. There is no need for outside resources. If you dont have the confidence and know how, why are you in this business anyhow.
no you couldn't

I suppose streetgen2 may be attached to his car, and why not?
If he does want to do the swap, then it's all good. Sometimes, if you can get a complete donor car, you can rape it of all you need, and sell the excess, including the bits off the recipient car.
Quite common over here, you actually end up in profit, or break even. And have a lot of satisfaction into the bargain.
Streetgen2, what Docurley means by the "clocks" is your instrument cluster. Besides immobilliser issues, it ensures your tacho remains accurate, when going from a 6 to 4 cylinder motor.

so yeah, if you had an awesome garage, plenty of time on your hands, and the knowledge you could pull it off for 3k. or you could sell your 2.8 and buy a 1.8T for the exact same price (if not less). kinda makes more sense to do the latter.
also if you had the ability to swap in a 1.8T, i would swap in a vrt over a 1.8t any day of the week

There wouldnt be many specialty tools if you pull the parts off a factory car..... YOU WOULD BE DOING A FACTORY TO FACTORY SWAP.
Not everyone wants to sell their car. Some people become attached. It seems very dumb to sell a car just because you dont feel like doing a swap.... Its ok to me I guess. I would just do the swap. Unless you have ever personally done engine swaps, I dont see how you could debate it at all. It is not near as hard in most cases, as you may read on the net.
