Default 2.8l trans in a 1.8t?

Has anyone installed the 5 speed 2.8L trans into there 1.8t? I might be interested in doing this if its a direct bolt on. Apparently the gear ratio is different? I would like a taller 5th, I cruise at 70 mph every day at like 3200 rpm. Any suggestions or "i've heard of that" would be sweet.

If you're going to take the time to do the swap why not do the 6speed swap out of the 2.7t b5S4? JM2C

The price difference is huge. Is 5th a taller gear in the 2.8? Is it really worth the swap?

I have a 2.8 with a pitted 1st gear and was wondering the opposite thing, is there a difference between the gearing of the turbo and V6 transmissions? would a turbo trans be better? I just want a quite transmission, I figure if I can use either one it will make my search easier. I am not picky, just want a new one.

heres how we can tell. In 5th gear at 70mph, what RPM are you reading? If your reading around 3200 then theres no difference in 5th.

My 2.8 turns 3000 at 70mph. From what I've learned, there is no final drive difference between the 5- and 6-speed boxes. Top gear in either turns the same rpm at the same speed. The gearing is a bit shorter in the 6-speed, which can help a little in accelerating, but that will likely be negated by having to shift one extra time. And if I recall right, to use the S4 box, you need S4 axles, which means S4 spindles, which will require S4 brakes as well. Unless you steal the S4 box, don't bother with it - it's a novelty mod more than anything. You're unlikely to gain any real-world performance from it.

True. That's kinda what I thought. But since I've got imthedevil on the line let me ask another question. Anybody ever heard of putting allroad front brakes on there b5. I'm installing rs6 brakes on an allroad at work and might be able to keep the allroad brake system. Input would be sweet.

The allroad shares its engine with the S4 so the transmission is probably the same too. The suspension (I'm pretty sure) is different. The axles I have no idea about. But it makes sense from a design and cost standpoint that as many parts as possible will carry over, and the brakes probably are very similar to those on the S4. S4 brakes can be used on an A4, either by using S4 spindles or I think there's an adapting bracket that can be used so you can run them on A4 spindles. Hopefully someone can chime in here and back this up or correct it.

One way you can get some insight would be to check ECS' website for S4 and allroad parts and compare part numbers - if they're the same, they're interchangeable. That'd tell you a lot about what parts may cross over between models.
