2.8L 1998 A4 Quattro wont start.. anyone got any suggestions ?
Hi All,
I have a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro saloon with the 2.8L engine. It ran pretty well until recently, then it had trouble starting for a day or two, then finally wouldn't start at all.
I searched various forums and all seemed to suggest the fuel pump relay as the prime suspect. I dug out the manual and replaced the fuel pump relay. At least I think it was the fuel pump relay, I couldn't find a diagram showing the exact configuration of relays in my car. The relay I replaced was part number 4DO 951 253 $ 89 9309 000.
Still no luck, I disconnected the return from the fuel rail and ran the pump and it seems to be delivering fuel just fine. I tested the resistance of coils and ht leads and all were within spec. I pulled various fuses as suggested by the manual and everything tested out fine... but the darn thing still wont start.. !
So today I used vag com software and got the following results..

I'm pretty sure the central locking errors all refer to a previous problem with a disintegrated impeller in the central locking pump.
I would be really grateful for any advice as to how to procede from here ?
Thanks in advance..

The car cranks well, and sounds on the brink of firing, but never does. If I crank it for a long time, I get three beeps and the oil light comes on...
I checked the fuses for the fuel pump and they seem fine, are there any others I should check.
Thanks and best regards,
Gavan

The injector codes are cluing me... I'm thinking you have a bad cam or crank sensor. i would say theft problem but you say it had trouble then finaly died so theft is ruled out, to a degree. now are you able to watch the data with the computer you have. if so check for rpm while cranking. no rpm then more then likely a crank sensor, but still could be a cam sensor. further more i'd be checking for good spark and diod the injector harnesses... see what ya come up with and get back to use.

maybe
well im having a problem something like yours but mine still runs just dies when i drive the car long amounts of time or run the ac and idle for a while. i pulled the relay i thought was the fuel pump and come to find out it poped up 8 codes the same codes you are having so i would say your problem is probaly that relay it runs the injectors the egr and the fuel tank presure vavle

Okay, I know this is going to sound weird, and people will disagree with me, but, as long as you have yoru radio code, disconnect the battery, both positive and negative for OVER 24 hours, just let it sit. Then reconnect them, and THEN read the codes....

If it was a cam sensor failure it'd log the code and run anyway - it only needs to be cued by one of the two cam sensors to run (had this failure). The crank sensor could cause it although it should trip a fail code. The two likely suspects to me are the ignition switch or the fuel pump. If the pump dies you won't get much in the way of codes but it could be the issue. It seems like the ignition switch could be it simply because of how many things aren't running or firing up, and all depend on the ignition voltage in order to run.
Search out a recent thread of mine called "weird sh*t while troubleshooting my car today" and you can try some of the things I did and see if they help you narrow it down.
Btw, the fuel pump relay should be stamped with the number 372 on it.

I have 1997 2.8 5 speed... had many checked engine when i got the car and ABS light, i fixed the checked engine light and the ABS already , everything was fin for last week and westerday morning, but when i tried the car at noon , it wont start i can hear the gas pump, but no starter or crank... also all the lights is fine on the dash board... when i got the car, i found that the old owner har the neutral safety switch jumped, cause the car starts without stepping on the clutch...do you think it is the ignition switch??? thank you
