2.8 Manual Trans noises

The issue of trying to get it into 2nd is the syncro, you dont have that much of an issue when shifting at 3k since thats where the gears rev match and you could even shift without using the clutch if done right.
The whine in 1st gear could be a chipped tooth, have seen others post about having that same issue and it turned out to be a chipped 1st gear.

From what I've read, the whine in first gear is very common. Mine does it to, and I've heard several other B5's doing it in traffic. Has to do with the way the teeth in first gear wear over time or some such thing. In the stuff I read, no one seemed terribly worried about it other than the fact that it was really annoying. I've kinda gotten used to it lol.
As for replacing the synchros, it would probably be more cost effective to buy a used/reman. tranny and swap it.

Thanks Guys,
Definitely appreciate your input and advice. I guess I can deal with the annoying sound for a little while longer until I can afford to buy a new trans. Its about time for a new clutch anyway. Only makes sense to replace both at the same time. Do any of you guys have any preference to a certain brand of clutch? My car is completely stock other than my exhaust and i have no plans to upgrade so i don't need a stage 3 or 4 clutch. But I want the best bang for my buck just like any other guy.

Yes.. Had a local member bring me his manual 2.8 so I could listen to it for him. I was pretty stumped but was sure it was an issue with internal gears. Car drove fine, though.

Gears in the manual and auto are completely different from each other. This just seems to be a manual 01A transmission issue.
