1998 A4 starts won't run
I need a little help. When i try to start my car the motor spins fine but it just will not fire. I can then disconnect the fuel line and when I try to start the thing it fires and runs until it empties out the fuel rail. Any ideas on what my problem might be. thanks

Replace the fuel filter first. It's cheap, easy and you probably need one anyway. Besides, it's the only mechanical part between the fuel rail and the pump and the pump seems to be working. If the filter doesn't solve your problem, check your pump relay.
After you do the new pump install, I would dump a can of full system fuel cleaner in the tank as well.

Thanks A4TurboGuy. Replacing the fuel filter was the first thing i did when I bought the car. I actually was able to get it to run some last night with everything connected. It took forever to get it to start. I'll try the fuel system cleaner. Also the relay, but since I'm getting fuel I'm assuming that is working.

Yeah, if you're getting furl to the rail, then you can probably count out everything before that (pump, filter, relay, etc).
Try focusing on air and spark. I would pull one of the spark plugs out and see if it's showing signs of running rich or running lean. That will tell you if it's a fuel problem or not.
If it's not a fuel problem, then you have to look at the intake system (MAF sensor, piping, filter, etc.).
Try pulling a plug first. It's free and it will give you the most reliable info available.
