Default 1996 A4 Quattro. Worth it?

Hello,

Forgive me if this isn't the correct place for this post.

I had a 99 that I loved, but I killed it about a month ago. So now I'm looking at a 96 A4 Quattro with around 85,000 miles on it. Seller is asking $6000 (which is under bluebook).

I'm wondering:
1) Is this a reasonable price.
2) Any issues I should be aware of with 96's
3) Any other recommendations/info.

Basically, I want your expert opinion. I've yet to speak with the current owner, but from the description, it appears to be well maintained -- 2nd owner, all service records available, exterior looks to be in good condition.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

if the timing belt hasn't been replaced then that is a must. if hes kept good service records of the vehicle and the tb has been changed, then its not to bad of a deal although ill bet you could knock the price down a little more.

Should be a fine car if you're not looking to make it go fast. Also keep in mind it's 170hp 12 valve 2.8 as opposed to the 99 which is a 190hp 30 valve 2.8. Mileage is good, but price still seems a tad high.

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I'm aware that it's due for a new timing belt; actually asked about it in the email I sent to him. I'll definitely try to talk him down a little more; especially if he hasn't replaced it already. Any idea what that'll run? Around $1000 to have it done?

Yeah, not looking to make it go fast, and it's definitely a little downgrade from my 99, but I just want a decent ride that I can take up snowboarding and hold me over until I can afford an S4. What would be a more reasonable price? I need that Quattro goodness.

$4.5-5k as long as it's in good shape with that mileage and no serious issues.

The repair manual says it takes 10 hours of labor i think, but depending on the shop, the price to install a new tb is anywhere from $700-1100 usually.

$6000 is high, even with the tb done and only 85,000 miles. Mine had 28,000 more miles than the one you are looking at but I only paid $3000. I would say to have him do the tb and offer him $4500 or $4000 and do the tb yourself.

Even though $6k is a little high, with only 85k on a damn 12v youd get your moneys worth. 85k is nothing for a 12v. It's when they get into the 200k range that you gotta start worrying about much. But still, $4.5k would be ideal and is about the going rate with all things considered.
