welcome to the site, The 12v vs 30v is a reference to the number of valves in the cylinder head of the engien, 12v's have 12 valves (2 per) and the 30V has 30v (5 per). The major difference between the two is modability (if you can call the V6 modable) and stock HP. The 12v has 176 vs the 30v's 190. the 12v engine can be found in the 1996-97 Audi A4, while the 30v is from 98-01 when they switched body styles.

I also believe that the Ignition coil thingy (for lack of calling it a distributor) is located in a different space on the 30v then the 12v. On the 12v it is right on top of the timing belt cover and is longitudinally placed, and if you have the original engine cover, the 12v's is more angular in design while the 30v has a more curved and smooth look to it

for reference the 12v engine cover and engine bay

If the valve cover covers (sounds weird but that's what they are) are still on the car, the 12V engine I believe says "12V" on it, whereas the 30V engine says "5V", implying 5 valves per cylinder. Or you could just drive them. If it's slow, it's a 30v, and if it's even slower, it's a 12v

nope my valve cover's just have the rings but I have noticed that a number of 30v Valve covers I've seen are silver while most 12v's I've seen are black.

and the driving thing is amazingly true
