Default 1.8T partial rebuild?

Ok so, I know this isn't for an Audi it's actually for the 98 Passat Wagon I just bought for my wife but it's still got the same AEB 1.8T engine. So I figured it'd be ok to ask here.

Basically it has a light knock in the engine and the turbo needs rebuilt. So I'm pretty sure it needs rod bearings for the knock as it doesn't seem very bad at all.

So this is what I'm thinking, since I'm going in there to replace the rod bearings I figure I might as well do some other stuff. So I was thinking maybe at the very least the rod bearings, piston rings, full gasket set, head bolts and new valves. Clean up the heads and pistons and what not.

I'm also going to do the timing chain and water pump. So I'm wondering if everything as far as rods and pistons are in good shape do you think this is pretty much considered a full rebuild? Do you think it'd be stupid not to replace the main bearings and thrust bearing? Can I do that without removing the block from the car? I don't have a ton of money and I'm calculating everything out that I've listed that I'll do for sure to about 600 bucks or slightly under in parts. I'm not really sure if replacing the valves is really needed though.

Edit: Oh this might be good info, the engine is right at 100k.

Guess no input, he said the turbo went bad after the oil pump went out. So I think it should be rebuildable so I ordered the rebuild kit from G-Pop shop as well as a gasket set.

Just trying to decide if I should order all the bearings or just get bearings for the Rods....I think due to money reasons I may just get the Rod Bearings and a timing belt kit and do the piston rings and what not.

I guess the engine in these isn't transverse mounted either. Anyways the knock I found out was just a little knock right when you first start it up after about 10 seconds its gone. There is a bit of valve tap and what not....so maybe the lifters or valves should be replaced as well I don't know. I bought the car for only 1200 bucks and it's KBB value is ~4k. So spending 500-800 bucks on parts isn't really that bad.
