Default 01 b5 1.8t 5 speed tranny service

How would I go upon changing the tranny fluid on my 5 speed b5? What type of oil does it take? And how much?

There is a "tamper-proof" drain plug on the bottom of the tranny. You can buy the socket from ECS, FCP, Ebay, and others. The fill plug is a 17mm allen head located on the driver's side just above the CV Joint. I ran a hose up into the engine bay from the fill plug to make filling easier.

The transmission takes ~3 quarts. There is some debate about GL4 vs. GL5 oil. As the GL4 was the spec for the car I decided to stick with it. There is some evidence to suggest that GL5 oils can be harmful to the yellow metals in the transmission.

The weight of the OEM oil is 75W90. I went with a slightly lighter 70W80 because I found the oil too stiff at cooler temps. I would highly recommend Redline oils. The MTL is what I used. If you want the slightly heavier stuff, look for MT-90.

While you're at it, you may want to look at changing the oil in the rear diff too if you have Quattro.

rear diff is 80w/90, which can also be used in the transmission. of course the weights can vary according to climate. considering you are from california, id go on the heavier side.

i used Motul 300 70w/90 in both, Redline 90 i would say is a better bet for the rear diff tho slightly thicker. JUST make sure its gl4/gl5 so you don't eat your synchros.

Any 75W90 gear oil will work in the rear diff. In my case the diff oil was much worse than the transmission.

Here is the drain plug socket that I bought.

VW/Audi Drain Plug Wrench

I also bought my Redline MTL from them and got the free shipping. Being in CA, you probably want the MT-90, which I'm not sure if they stock.

Thanks, do you remember how much oil the rear diff takes? My guess is 1 quart.

Rear diff takes 2 quarts. I managed to fill the rear diff without one of the plunger pumps, but having done it I wish I had just bought one. Major pain!

The drain/fill plugs on the diff are 10mm allen heads. The fill plug is on the passenger side if I recall.
