I think it's better to be just inside the fender (mine are 4-5mm) rather than a little outside to prevent road grime from being slung all over the side of your car. I agree but not because of road grime... Wouldn't want to be rubbing against the wheel well!

I've also heard that spacers cause vibration... I don't have them though, so I can't tell you first hand.

If you really want to get technical about it, you wheel is no longer centered over your wheel bearings, which increases stress, which CAN increase wear, which CAN lead to vibration. Obviously, the bigger the spacer, the better the chances, but on the other hand, you're talking 20mm, not 20cm....

Hey, I'm not trashing them, I'm just stating the full story.
Benefits outweigh the risks (again, my opinion).
Kinda like meth, sure, you look like this
, but man, is it great!
Speaking of meth, and the wonderful benefits it has, such as:

The offset of your new wheels should be what you put in the ET space. If the wheels are not staggered this should be the same for both front and back. The spacer part you leave blank. When you hit calculate it tells you the correct spacer size for your wheels. Make sure to subtract 2 or 3mm to make sure you don't rub when going over bumps. I run 15mm on the front and 20mm on the back with stock wheels and it looks MUCH better than stock spacing. I don't know why don't make this a standard thing on sport cars.

some quick work with a tape measure shows I need at least a 20mm rear, 15mm front. I would say I'd prefer a 30mm rear and a 25mm front. As long as the front is 5mm less they should look ok. If the front wheels are spaced closer together than the rear wheels are, what do you think will happen as far as handling is concerned? Not much I assume.
