TT transmission- 5 speed or 6?
I'm about 5 minutes from buying my first Audi....I am a huge enthusiast and have been working on turbo DSM's for quite some time. This will be the first time I am faced with a decision of a 5 or 6 speed transmission. I'm look to have a smooth ride on the highway (i travel 3-4 hour trips once or twice a month) but my main goal is to have a fast TT. Which would be better, 5 or 6 speed, keeping in mind i'd take speed over comfort and will be modifying the car until i'm bored with it?

If you go with a 6sp you will have the higher output engine (225hp) than the 5sp (180hp) - both engines are the 1.8 liter turbo. If you plan to mod the TT (like everyone else here) you can get the 225hp up to 300hp with alot ofstage 3 work - the 180hp somewhere in the 250hp area if I'm not mistaken.
I have the 180hp 5sp - wish I had stumbled across the 225 myself.

the 6 speeds trans are stronger but a 5 speed has better gearing. in a 1/4 mile the 5speed finishes in 3rd and 6sp finishes in 4th. But you can get better gas milage out of a 6 gear than in a 5th gear on the highway.

Heres the specs for all the TT's to date in the US.
You can eyeball the info for whatever car you're looking at, and see what you think. Drive ratios included.
