Default Timing Belt, should I replace..?

Hi Guys,

New to the forum. I have a 2001 TT Coup 225 hp Quattro. I just turned over 50,000 miles. I have read the posts & am a bit freaked out.
All the " normal " maitenace has/was done at a local dealer since it was originally bought here in town. I am the second owner. Dealer confirmed & showed me all paperwork on the car.
I bought it 6 months ago with just under 44,000 on it. The car was driven just over 10,000 miles a year from the first owner. It's in excellent shape. Seems well taken care of.
I have been reading the " horror " posts on the timing belt issues. I am wondering since I will come into a nice sum in the form of tax return check should I go ahead & get the timing belt & such taken care of now..?
My gut is telling me " do it "

Opinions PLEASE....!

thanks much... nismo

A little early is better than a little late..... if you know what I mean. Do you plan on doing it yourself, or letting a garage take care of it? Sounds like you have a little time to look around for a reputable shop. The Audi dealer is probably one of your more expensive routes, but take a look around at who'll do it for how much $$.

I don't think you have anything to be freaked out about though, so take a few breaths.... Some people have it go around 60K, others make it to 105K. Letting it go past 60 is where you may/may not be pushing your luck.

Thanks much on the reply,

I have found a good reputable shop not too far from home. No way am I going to let the dealer handle it. I once took it in to have a part changed out in the driver door.
They told me to drop it off around 9:30 am. I got the car there by 8:45 am. The car sat for 1 whole day & then it took them half of the next to get the job done. No Thanks.........!

No more dealer.

I'm replacing 8 bent valves and reworking the entire engine with an under spec timing belt failure the $1500 or so is cheaper than trhe $4000....

My 2000 180T timing belt snapped at 66,000 miles. $5,500 to fix. We all love these cars, but they are not well engineered, especially considering the price. My advice would be to be very faithful with the maintenance and upkeep and make sure you get the 60,000 mile timing belt service, these aren't japanese cars that last very long, they are very delicate (but so much more fun to drive)
